Mini Split Electrical Requirements: Circuits, Disconnects, 115V vs 230V
The part of the project that is most often hired out even by committed DIYers. General rules: small 9k-12k systems may run on 115V (the MRCOOL DIY 12k in our dataset is a 115V model), most 18k and larger systems need a 230V dedicated circuit; every outdoor unit needs a weatherproof disconnect within sight of the condenser; breaker and wire size are set by the nameplate's MCA/MOP figures, not by rules of thumb. Most jurisdictions require a permit for a new circuit, and many require a licensed electrician to make the final connections. The table lists the true-DIY systems - none of them removes the electrical step, and planning it first is the difference between a one-weekend and a three-weekend project.
