How to Install a Mini Split: The Honest Overview
This page is an overview of what an installation actually involves - including the steps marketing leaves out - so you can decide which route fits you. The table lists every true-DIY system in our dataset, the only systems whose installation genuinely skips the vacuum-and-gauges step. It is not a substitute for the manufacturer's installation manual, which is the document that governs your specific system.

The honest step overview
Every mini split install, DIY or pro, is the same sequence. The difference is who holds the tools at steps 5-7.
- 1. Mount the indoor handler on an interior wall (or ceiling cassette), level, with a slight drain pitch.
- 2. Drill the 2.5-3 inch wall hole, sloped down to the outside, for the line set, drain, and control cable.
- 3. Set the outdoor condenser on a pad or wall bracket, level, with clearance for airflow.
- 4. Run the line set (copper pair), drain hose, and communication cable between the units; keep bends gentle and within the system's rated line length.
- 5. Connect the lines. True-DIY quick-connect systems: tighten the factory fittings - the set is pre-charged, done. Flare systems: cut, flare, torque to spec.
- 6. Flare systems only: pressure-test with nitrogen, pull a deep vacuum (below 500 microns), hold it, then release the condenser's refrigerant charge. This step is why flare installs are pro territory for most people - it needs a vacuum pump, gauges, and care.
- 7. Electrical: a dedicated circuit and an outdoor disconnect. Many jurisdictions require a permit and a licensed electrician for this part regardless of who mounted the units.
- 8. Power up, check drainage, verify heating and cooling at the handler.
When a pro is legally or practically required
- Refrigerant handling: opening a flare system without recovering/evacuating properly can violate EPA rules; technicians who charge for refrigerant work need EPA Section 608 certification. A sealed true-DIY system avoids opening the circuit at all.
- Electrical permits: most jurisdictions require a permit (and often a licensed electrician) for a new 230V circuit and disconnect.
- Warranty: several brands condition full warranty terms on professional installation - read the model terms before choosing the route.
- Ceiling cassettes and long line runs (beyond the pre-charged length) need charge adjustment by weight - a scale-and-gauges job.
Buying notes
- Read the manual for your exact model before ordering: line-set length, breaker size, and clearance requirements are model-specific.
- The wall hole and the electrical are the two steps DIYers most often end up hiring out - budget for both possibilities.
